Capital City Public Charter School, Washington DC          $3000

Chartered in 2000 as the first parent-founded Washington DC charter school, this school now serves 236 diverse children PreK-8th grade. This is our second grant to them. The first, in 2003, funded their new library. Now, with this grant, we support their purchase of non-fiction learning materials for their school-wide learning themes, or expeditions, as well as multicultural folk tales for ESOL needs and picture books for emerging readers of all ages.

The Patricia M. Sitar Center for the Arts, Washington DC        $1000
To fund library books for a new library for this multidisciplinary arts program providing after school care and art education for students ages 6-18, over 80% of which are low income.  

Kids Connection, The Gatepost, Washington DC                 $1600
A grant to fund books for their JOBS (Jobs, Opportunities and Business Skills) program teaching young people the life skills needed to get a job. ($1500 from Whitehead Endowment/ $100 from NHLF funds.)


Center for Social Justice, Research and Teaching and Service,
ASK Program, Washington DC                                 $2000

A grant from the Whitehead Endowment to support the ASK (After School Kids) program to establish a Youth Library and a Professional Development Library for underserved and at-risk children.


CentroNia Experience Corps, Washington DC                 $2,500
Awarded this matching grant to fund books for one-on-one tutoring program pairing seniors with at-risk elementary aged children in eight DC area elementary schools.

Homestretch, Falls Church VA                                $1,000
To establish the Homestretch Employment Resource Library serving homeless adults as they work on their goals of re-employment, attaining housing, and improving life skills.

Mosby Woods Elementary School, Fairfax VA                 $   500
To fund classroom library resources of Chris Van Allsburg books for teaching program with special written word and visual cues.
        
Shelter House, Falls Church VA                                $1,500

Granting this homeless shelter program funds to purchase books to form a permanent library for their residents and re-institute a weekly Reading Program for the children living there.
