This outreach program has just renovated their building, creating a space for a library. We funded the purchase of new books for this space, used by 3,000 at-risk youth through story times, traditional check out use, mentoring and tutoring programs, and life skills instruction.
Dane County Public Library, Madison, WI $500
For the purchase of Large Print and Audio books for their collection which travels and is made available to senior citizens in nursing homes, institutions, and housing complexes in the Dane County area.
Department of Education Recovery School District, New Orleans, LA $15,000
Following Hurricane Katrina, the foundation identified the need for donation of funds to provide high school fiction books for English classes in area high schools. Leveled library book collections were purchases and distributed.
Union Settlement Association, Harlem, NY $2,500
For books to support the Theme Teams youth program in public schools in East Harlem, where underserved elementary aged youth learn through instructional themes designed to engage them in literacy and reading.
Everybody Wins, Washington DC $1500
For the purchase of books for their Story Time program where 1st through 3rd graders receive a Story Time theme related book for their home libraries.
Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Wyoming MI $1000
To cover the cost of instructional materials in their expanding adult literacy ESOL program.
Scotland Literacy Council, Laurinberg, NC $1100
To fund learning materials for this training program serving at-risk displaced workers moving from welfare to work in the NC county with the highest unemployment in the state.
Maine Humanities Council, Portland ME $3000
For the purpose of buying books for their New Books/New Readers program where over 30 sites in disadvantaged areas, prisons, immigrant populations and community centers are served with literacy programs. The books covered in the series are given to the participants. These adult books are often the very first books in English or at an adult level in their homes.
