The NHLF is a small, private foundation with a corpus of less than $1M. Typical grants average $500 to $3000. The Trustees, who meet three times a year, have particular interest in the following criteria where applicable:
-Value of the project to the organization requesting support and/or to the community and region in which it is located.
-Soundness of the sponsoring organization, commitment of staff resources to the project and competence to meet the projects objective where applicable.
-Prospects for maintaining the enterprise beyond duration of the grant requested and, where applicable,
involvement of the community and relevant organizations in the maintenance of the project and development of future goals.
-Stability and financial ability of the organization
requesting support to carry out its program.
While grant requests from all areas of the United States are considered and approved, the Board of Trustees encourages and gives preference to requests from the Washington DC/Maryland/Virginia area.
